Fine writing instruments. Ball points, pencils, roller balls and
fountain pens. Pictured on the next few pages are a sample of what can be done.
These not only look beautiful, but also feel really comfortable in your hand. I
have spent a great deal of time developing a shape that feels right. You can
see that the lower section swells slightly toward the mid section and then
tapers again toward the top. This nestles comfortably in your hand to give just
the right feel of balance.
Many variations are possible. Just about any hardwood can be
used. The close grained tropicals are fantastic. I love the rosewood family
especially (Honduran Rosewood, Kingwood, Cocobola are examples). Deer and elk
antler make lovely and interesting pens. (These are collected from the
naturally shed antlers, not from hunter's kills.) Mixing woods and antler or
mixing different woods gives some very nice contrasts. I like using a narrow
band of dark rosewood with antler.
