A solid bed frame is the result of solid joinery. These
beds are assembled with old fashioned bed bolts. Each rail is joined to each
post with a mortise and tenon joint and then both are drilled to take the bed
bolt. This is still the best way to make a solid, stable bed. The bolts are
covered with Horton Brass reproduction bed bolt covers. I include a bed bolt
wrench with each bed.
Notice that the post is a massive 3 in square in the picture to
the right. About a foot above the rail I start the octaganal section and the
taper. The post tapers until it is about 1 inch on a side at the top.

The bed can be made with or without the canopy testers. If you
chose not to have testers, I top the post with a finial such as shown below. Of
course, if you want both the tester and finial, that is possible, too.
