The uprights are joined to the feet with mortise and tenon joints that are then through pegged by the stretchers. These pegs are wedged to guarantee a lifetime fit. All edges are rounded over to give the piece a smooth sculptured look.

Variations on a theme:

I used Ohio grown Cherry. Oak, walnut, maple or mahogany would also work. Really, any close grained hardwood works for this piece. Shown below is one made from red oak. Note the contrast of the walnut wedges in the through tenons

The stretchers could be made from a contrasting wood.

This could be made as a take apart piece, with knock down joints at for the stretchers.
