This bed is made from Ohio grown Wild Cherry. I find that Ohio
grown Cherry has better color and graining than Pennslyvanian or New York
Cherry. This is the "right" wood for the piece, but it can be made in Mahogany
or Walnut.
The Bedpost is handturned. The head board is curly
Cherry.
The finish is six to eight applications of hand rubbed Indian
Garnet Shellac. This gives the Cherry a nice deep red that ages to an almost
Burgundy color over the years.
The reeding is handcarved. Each individual reed flares wider as
the post diameter gets larger and then becomes narrower as the post narrows.
This is a detail that you can't get with a machine made bed.You will see some
variations in the reeds and tool marks. This is also typical of the original
pieces. Back
