Cherry table in the Chinese Chippendale style. This table is
perfect beside the Sheraton poster bed. This one actually sits next to my
daughter's pencil post bed. It also works very well as a side table or lamp
stand in the living room. The solid cherry top features breadboard ends.
The legs are beaded in keeping with the original design. I use
an antique wooden handplane along the edges of the leg to form the bead. Modern
routers or shapers just can't duplicate this feature. The center drawer
features a Horton brass pull and cherry cockbeading. The drawer is hand
dovetailed.
But this table has a secret. Actually, a couple of them. There
are secret drawers on either side of the center drawer. The eighteenth century
homeowner didn't have a safe deposit box to store valuables. They relied on
these hidden drawers in their best furniture to hide their papers and jewelry.
Cabinet makers developed ingenious techniques for hiding little spaces. This
table gives you a place to hide items that you don't want readily seen, but you
can still easily get to them (if you know the secret).
The table can also be made in the Shaker style as you see in the
picture above. This table has simpler, cleaner lines. It features delicately
tapered legs.
